The human body is an integrated whole. Though it is made up of different systems, each system influences the work of the other system and is simultaneously influenced by them.
Yoga is so ancient that we have no definite knowledge of its origin. We find its mention in the Vedas, that were created some 2,500 years before Christ.
Yoga means union, union of man's individual spirit with the spirit of the universe, or God. However, there is more than one method of achieving this union. but all the methods lead to the same goal.
The self cannot be known by one who is dull or restless, who is not strong, disciplined and self-controlled. Neither can it be known by much learning nor by reasoning. It can be known only through calmness of mind, through the practice of Yoga and meditation.
Through constant practice of Yoga, one can overcome all difficulties and eradicate all weaknesses. Pain can be transmuted into bliss, sorrow into joy, failure into success and sickness into perfect health. Determination, patience, persistence lead us to the goal.
Mastery of the body and breath are an undoubted aid to those concerned with their spiritual evolution. By having full control over the physical condition, the body becomes calm, allowing the mind to be directed inwardly more easily in perfect tranquility, to achieve a higher spiritual level.
